I’ve driven a bunch of trucks in this range, but the Atego 818 kinda stands out for cabin layout. The visibility is solid, I never really have blind spots with that huge windshield. The interior is pretty comfortable, with everything laid out simple, nothing in the way. Getting in and out is easy, seat adjustment is decent too. Only thing is, kinda wish there was more storage for small things in the cab, I got paperwork all over the place sometimes. But overall, gets the job done for those long days.

So, I’ve had the 818 at my job for the past year. What I like is the visibility from the cab - windows are big, I see everything I need. And the turning radius is tight, you can actually wiggle it around cramped yards without that much headache. It pulls decently, I mean, for an 8 tonner, it does ok even when loaded to the limit. On the downside, heating in the cab takes a bit to get going in winter, which sucks when you start early mornings. Haven’t had a breakdown so reliability’s good so far. Normal oil changes and checks haven’t been crazy expensive.

Tried out the Atego for distribution runs. Visibility is better than comparable models I’ve driven, and the cabin layout feels practical for daily work. Starting with a traditional key seems outdated but works fine. The payload handling was seamless, though maneuverability in tight urban spaces requires slight practice. Been running an Atego since 2016, mostly city hauls with the 4-cylinder diesel. First thing, it sips less fuel than older trucks, so that’s easy on the wallet over time. I do wish I didn’t have to watch the CAN wires so much though, mine started acting up around 600k kilometers: sometimes the dash lights up like a disco for no reason. It’s not too hard to fix at the right shop, but still an extra headache every few years. Cab is alright, feels tough, but I had a tiny rust spot under the windshield after a few winters. Suspension’s never been great for huge potholes, so you gotta take city craters slow or risk breaking bits. Overall, keeps moving and does what I need.

Used the Atego a lot on construction sites, mostly the shorter Day cab version. It handles those cramped yards well, especially with the full air brakes and hill hold, makes stop-start traffic less stressful. Not a ton of luxury, but tough - never had it let me down pushing through rough access roads or bouncing over curbs.

Power-wise, the bigger engine with the Telligent auto gearbox suits heavy loads, but I don't love the noise once it gets working hard. Usually keep windows down anyway, so what can you do. Feels sturdy, no big problems keeping it on the job, just service regularly and it holds up.
