Ran an FMX 420 on site work, and the chassis feels properly built for it. The three-piece steel bumper, gearbox protection and engine protection are not just for looks. It takes the usual knocks better than a road truck. The 13-litre 420 hp engine has enough pull for a 24-ton load, while the 12-speed box with crawler ratios helps when the ground gets rough. I also like the liftable rear steering axle; when empty, saving tyre wear matters. Fuel use is fairly reasonable for this kind of tipper. Cab is close to the FH inside, so it is a decent place to spend a shift.

The bit I like here is the driver setup. A suspended heated seat is not fancy for the sake of it when you spend all day bouncing between demolition jobs and tips. The wider, electrically heated mirrors and automatic headlamps are useful too, especially on early starts in poor weather. Drivers also mention the cab feels more spacious. Only thing, it is still a rigid tipper day cab, so don’t expect loads of room to live in. For a shift though, looks comfortable.

What I noticed in the FMX 420 is the cab setup. The seat has plenty of adjustment, the steering wheel adjusts well and the multifunction controls are handy when you're doing full days. It feels similar to an FH cab, not the basic work-truck setup some dumpers get. Underneath it has the serious stuff: reinforced frame rails, protected driveline, 13L motor at 420 hp. That should suit hard quarry work. I would want to check parts prices and local workshop support before buying one, because heavy-duty Volvo bits are rarely cheap. But from the spec, the truck looks well prepared for regular hard use.

The cab is one of the things I liked on the FMX 420. It feels close to an FH inside, not like an old work-site truck. Seat and steering wheel have plenty of adjustment, so after a full shift my back was in better shape than expected. Multi-function wheel is handy too. The 12-speed box with crawler ratios works well when you need to ease around a loading area. It is still a 24-tonne tipper, so don’t expect it to feel small or light through narrow gates.

The cab is closer to an FH than people might expect from a construction tipper. Plenty of seat adjustment, the wheel adjusts well too, and the multifunction controls are useful when you spend a full shift in it. I drove similar Volvo setups and that makes a difference after a few hours over rough access roads. The air suspension on all three rear axles helps keep it from feeling too harsh. The 12-speed gearbox with two low ranges gives you options when loaded, although there is a lot going on at first if you are new to this transmission. 450-litre tank is decent for regional hauling.
